Anti-damp devices for a house: air or walls?

Separate the two needs
A search for an anti-damp device may refer to a moisture absorber, a dehumidifier or a device marketed for rising damp. These products are not interchangeable. First establish where the water is present and what supplies it: indoor air, outside water, a leak or moisture from the ground.
Look at the room and the building
Describe the affected spaces and when the marks appear. A below-ground wall, a cold corner and the base of an external wall do not necessarily have the same problem. Condensation on a window does not rule out another water source elsewhere. Several observations are more useful than the general word “damp”.
Choose for the intended use
For ATE and ATG devices, check their intended use for rising damp and the requirements of the selected model. Advice before purchase helps compare products and installation conditions. If the cause remains uncertain, investigating the building is a separate step from choosing a product.
